Web Development Blog

For those of us who host our own blog or website, it is unavoidable that it will have to be moved. First, you may want to move your site if you are switching your hosting company. And second, you need to ‘move’ your website if you are transferring it to a fresh domain, new directory, or creating another version on an area server.

Use the links below to demand appropriate set of instructions. Contrary to popular belief, this is actually the easiest kind of move. And there are two main ways to go about it. WordPress features a built-in import to facilitate the procedure of moving content in one blog to another. And there are just three steps that you need to follow to truly get you blog up and running. Create an export document.

  • Profile images and header graphics
  • 2 Home displays
  • Biggest Crush…. – Ha ha ha-that’s another secret
  • From the Apple menu, go for System Preferences
  • Unlimited Styles & Effects done

On your own blog, navigate to ‘Export’ and produce a WordPress export document. This is a special XML files that may contain your articles, pages, comments, custom fields, categories, and tags. Install WordPress on your new host. You shall now need to create a working installation of WordPress on your new host. And be certain to upload your complete wp-content directory to the new installation.

Import the WordPress export documents. Now, navigate to ‘Import’ on the new set up and publish the export document that you created in step 1 1. And that’s it! Your site should be useful completely. Sometimes, due to web hosting restrictions, or based on how big is your export file, Method 1 won’t work so well. So now, you’ll hear about our preferred method.

For this, you will need a database to gain access to, (often phpMyAdmin, ), and a bit more technical knowledge. Make a database or dump export document. Access your database and download its contents. Sometimes, a hosting company will have a computer program which ‘backs up’ a database without ever needing to access the database directly.

Transfer all files. Using FTP download all data files from your ‘old’ hosting company. And then publish these to your new hosting company. Make sure to update the settings in your wp-config.php document, which holds your database access information. Import your database. You will need to access the new database now.

To move WordPress to a new domain requires a few more steps. As with the steps mentioned previously, you’ll need to literally change the positioning of your WordPress installation probably. In addition, you’ll also need to update your WordPress settings and permalinks. The proceed to a new directory is likely easier than moving to a new domain. Transfer all data files. As with the steps above, transfer all documents from the old directory site to the new index. Usually do not delete any files yet!

Update your WordPress settings. General. Update the ‘WordPress address’ and ‘Blog address’ to reflect the change. When you strike save, your blog will much longer be available in your old index no. Update permalinks. Now, demand new directory. You should start to see the blog and working up. Upload and activate the Update URLs plugin. Update URLs and get into the appropriate settings to update all your links.

And presto, your website is preparing to go. Clean up. You verify that the transfer was successful Once, you can delete the data files in your old WordPress directory website. You can even opt for the WordPress Import/Export file method given above as Method 1. If this method is chosen by you, you will need to upgrade your permalinks using the Upgrade URLs plugin also. Sometimes, it is not possible to improve the physical WordPress directory. In these full cases, you can transform the URL simply by updating WordPress configurations.

General. Here you will see two configurations: WordPress Address and Blog Address. By upgrading only your blog Address, WordPress shall ‘map’ to the new listing. Note: You will need to move the index.php file to the blog address directory. Likewise, there are multiple ways to move to a fresh domain. To move to a fresh site, we suggest Method 1 above.
